I wrote some books and made some choices some people disagree with. I’m not here. (This is a retired account I’ve left up for the archive.)

I don’t want to be here anymore. I mean, I love being alive and on planet earth—most days. I’m just tired of Instagram and the whole social web.

It’s not for everyone, but it works for me. Best wishes to you all. Pardon the interruption in your daily scrolling. I get the irony of a departure post, but I thought it better than the standard Irish exit. Although, that would be appropriate too. :)

If you want to find my words and some pictures and ideas, you can find me on substack. I will leave the link in the bio. I love the community happening there and the focus on writing and writers. I am shifting most of my focus online to that outlet.

It doesn’t feel good to me. Doesn’t make sense anymore. Doesn’t align with anything I want my life to be about. So, goodbye for now. I’ll leave this account up because it offers a lot of nice memories and moments. Maybe I’ll delete later. Maybe I’ll come back. I dunno.

I’d rather listen to a record than scroll from one talking head to the next, all sharing or selling something I don’t want or need. I am tired of staring in confusion at the random advice slung by random strangers on the internet—and for what? To what end? I just don’t get it.

I’d rather go for a walk or cling to the one I love instead of picking up my phone and mindlessly consuming. I’d rather stare off into space and maybe have an original thought or cook a meal.

I’m leaving social media, because it doesn’t work for me anymore. The only thing keeping me here is the idea that maybe, at some point, it’ll be useful again. But really it just brings out the worst, laziest, and most jealous parts of my personality. I can do without.

"Is there anybody out there?" he wondered, as he shouted into the void of social media and wondered who was really listening.

We make things not because we know what we’re doing but because we are overwhelmed by some primal desire to figure out something. Whether we realize it or not, every creation is a puzzle we are trying to solve. And the work always begins with a question.

I am really enjoying the experience of writing on . It's light, easy, hard to break, and writer-focused. is right in that it feels like blogging circa 2010. It's fun to find other writers there, as well. A true community. I'm all in.

The beginning of any honest endeavor is often marked by the inability to talk about it. Whether it’s a poem or a cure for cancer or a new relationship, if you can speak eloquently about it at its inception, you probably aren’t going deep enough.

The other weekend, we got in the car and drove forty minutes to our favorite cabin. As we pulled up to the house, I said to my love, “Do you know what today is?” She shook her head sheepishly. I told her, “Today is your wedding day.” And it was. 📷 Zach Gray

There is no such thing as good writing. "Good" is subjective. Some will love what you write, others will hate it. Your job is to be effective, to clearly say what you have to say as best you can say it. Don't try to be right or good. Make an argument.

The challenge is that the way many writers think is through their writing. Which is why having a good editor is so important. An editor, when they’re doing their job, is a professional thinker who forces you to reconsider your thinking in light of another perspective.

Actual* conversation in our house: Me: *sighhhhh* Her: How are you doing, babe? Me: Beleaguered by the vicissitudes of life. Her: Have another deadline, huh? Me: Mhm... Her: Even in crisis, you are a poet. *Dialogue edited for dramatic effect.

Every word I dare to type, each sentence I dream up—these are all invitations to an inward journey. Writing is therapy. It's a chance to witness on paper what I think about something.
