Truly don’t care about Elon Musk being on a special magazine cover but I just don’t understand “making humans a spacefaring species” / “preserving the light of consciousness” as goals for anyone to care about.

Valuing the existence of notional future human beings over their nonexistence may feel intuitive but it’s morally backward. The reason human extinction would be awful is the suffering that would happen along the way. Period!

Btw this is also a mistake people make in talking about climate change, where there are lots of scary warnings about human extinction or the earth become uninhabitable, which are unlikely, vs. mass suffering, which is happening now and accelerating and should be the focus
