Set all the ad-targeting options in my Facebook settings to "no." Pretty quickly, it made a big difference in the ads I see. Depersonalized ads are easier to tune out, I think.

Assuming "connecting the world" is something you can ever do without causing more harm than good is begging the question. Zuck treats it as a ground truth but it's an article of faith. It's a hypothesis and we're the experiment.

If you think your product is great, why not invite reviewers to amend or add to their reviews after, say, six months? Or wait until then to ask for an initial review. Does anyone do this?

E-commerce gripe: A lot of products are hard to review properly until you've used them a while, but the seller always prompts you to write a review immediately. I like writing reviewing stuff, but if I write a glowing review and then defects emerge later, I feel like a chump.

Zuck is taking "a broader view of our responsibilities." Just look how he's taking responsibility for the contents of other people's in-boxes.

Jesus. Even assuming Facebook had the purest of intentions here, how could this company see itself--as recently as LAST MONTH--as a good enough steward of users' data to even think about touching something this sensitive?

"we thought his ideas would be just bad enough to appease our critics, we didn't realize they'd be bad enough to outrage our allies" is a pretty lame explanation to have to resort to

here's an idea: hire opinion writers whose ideas you think are good, not opinion writers who seem like good representatives of what you know are bad ideas. that would save everyone some trouble.
