using chrome devtools, we can see that there's actually a hidden "masthead-logo" element right next to the logo. removing it reverts the logo to the original position.

it has a hard coded width, which is why the real logo gets pushed despite the extra logo being hidden.

if we disable the css to hide the element, we can see the extra youtube logo.

from what i can tell, all of youtube desktop web is affected worldwide.

i wonder how such a change reaches production. it seems like the sort of thing that would be caught by QA immediately? especially if it's truly affecting everyone worldwide.
perhaps there were multiple issues that happened together that led to this bug?

anyways the moral of tthe story is to test changes before releasing them to billions of people worldwide. i guess.
