How can space mining possibly be illegal. Once you've launched through your jurisdiction's airspace there are no laws right? Am I correct?

No, not exactly. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outer_Space_Treaty … Different groups interpret OST provisions differently, hence need for space lawyers....
