Quite aside from using a 60ies era (heritage) rocket for that ... the real problem there is, that Elon Musk wasn't crazy. He was so conservative, that 12 years ago people said it wasn't much of a rocket he was building. What with the small gas generator kerosene engines etc...

NASA lost 2 earth science missions worth ~$700m total trying to onboard
@OrbitalATK Taurus XL as a new launch vehicle. After those failures they opted to fly similar flights on the last Delta IIs in inventory. I don't think you can really fault that decision.

@elonmusk tries to solve problems, others (experts) believe to be unsolvable atm. "Crazy" is, not giving up on ideas. @NASA needs to abandon the overpriced rocket, while having pool of low priced private launch systems. Focus on Science & Space Exploration.

It’s not like NASA hasn’t pushed the envelope, even recently. It’s possible that many of the most innovative things aren’t terribly photogenic. . . But still, Deep Space 1, DSAC, and GPIM come to mind. TransHab was originally a NASA idea.
