I suppose if the only worry is Big Sites, which might not be unreasonable, but there are loads that will use <input type="password" ...> because, well, it *ought* to work, being declarative not prescriptive.

In other words, as well as adding lots of pretty things, perhaps html4 -> html5, or their implementers, ought first to have dealt with some security aspects of older things, to allow them to work.
