As a conference organiser I just let people use whatever they prefer. As a speaker I find using whatever the conference has available saves me a lot of hassle. That's what I meant: we let people use their own laptop, but have one available in case they don't want to use their own.

I know of other conferences (e.g. RSA) that tell you to use their laptop, unless you have a good reason to use your own (e.g. demos). I don't see any issues with that either. In each case, you have to trial the slides for every talk anyway.
