works for me with -O0 and -O1, not -O2 gcc (5.5 and 6.4) Something must be optimized out OK with clang whatever -On

Well what did you expect - it's a CPU issue :) Separate address space for kernel on x86? I believe that should be the case for sparc64 (due to the help of context registers).

Theo De Raadt's biggest mistake with OpenBSD was to rely on 3rd party hardware. Should have build it all inhouse ! I bet he knew that from the very start... ;-)
