I agree with this, but there are several more sensitive sites that do not allow self registration (online banks) in which the generic message is preferred

The problem is that it remains pretty trivial to obtain an username in most cases, and it’s not a fix for weak passwords unfortunately. For instance in Italy all the banks nowadays defaults in SMS based 2 factor auth which is a much better measure IMHO.

I suppose you've never inadvertently typed an email address as username@gnail.com when trying to sign in? It's as much a UX reminder to doublecheck the username as it is to keep bashing the password.

Admittedly, this is more a problem on phone software keyboards, but the issue applies also to people who hunt&peck on hardware keyboards.

Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to unlock this computer Endless Mason (CORP\emason) is logged on ... Get the password wrong and it tells you that either the username or password is invalid.

I don't agree completely... Registration could have a completely different, stricter throttling policy

No it isn’t. User could have mistyped the username. The server knows the pair don’t match, it doesn’t know which one is wrong for the person sitting at the keyboard. Sensible to suggest user check both.

You have a point, unfortunately the nature's of login & signup mean you have to treat them differently Signup have filters to prevent robot use, login does not because that annoys humans Thus if you allow isolate confirmation leaks there, you open a huge robot guessing hole
