nothing new here - 32-bit ARM and PowerPC also have "char" as unsigned.

PowerPC is the same. If you need an explicitly signed 8-bit integer type, there's <stdint.h> int8_t.

Android (armeabi, armeabi-v7a, arm64-v8a) has "char" unsigned too.
