Just like you can ban resolver implementations by leveraging their hardcoded limits on the number of indirections in compressed names.

comes out as "p\.\.u\.\.p\.\.p\.\.i\.\.e\.\.s\..00f.net" on OSX.

Yep. macOS properly quote the dots, browsers can connect. BSDs don’t quote characters, yet resolve. Linux glibc doesn’t resolve.
