There's a _reason_ Chrome and Firefox now self-update. Automatic updates: Good for security. I can't overstate this.

It’s happened *many* times; causing BSODs to deleting core Windows files. One of them screws up roughly once a year

Or flagging themselves as malware. But Chrome is a way better example of auto-update done right.

Indeed. They’ve invested a lot in doing it right. I don’t think I’ve had an update break since 3.x or so.
