This is now fun to read. Brings back memories when I ran a few qmail-based franken-MTAs. Even maintained a patchset with my own implementation of IPv6 support. It's all gone now.

8 gig of memory on a pentium II (no one used 1.03 for long). Clutching at straws much! I used to set mem limits on qmail and don't have that much ram on my servers now, nvm then.
Trying to recall if it ran under the daemon class and wondering if OpenBSD limits daemon by default -
Even if using such a huge number as 32bits worth of mem, you would think djb would limit it. I guess he decided, it would cause knobs/problems? People are coding a new mta in go that couldn't be overflowed. It should, but I bet it won't take the priv sep approach of qmail!!!
