@jedisct1 You may want to warn macOS users to set block_unqualified to false if they are using a VPN client. It seams on macOS, a new network interface needs to set up an unqualified dns domain for lookups and bonjour. Thanks to @sparklabs for pointing me the right direction!
Do you know what exact name queries are sent to and what the query type is? What exact problem happens with what VPN client? (Never had such an issue with dsvpn).

I even tried to forward http://protonvpn.com to 1.1.1.1 because I had a sneaking suspicion the problem was dns related. Didn't change jack, so I finally activated the nx.log to see these .viscosity queries.
