Libpcre (PERL 5 regex library) is still maintained. And it’s still on Sourceforge. And a new version was just released. https://sourceforge.net/projects/pcre/files/pcre2/10.33/ …
So, pcre2 is newer than pcre3. Color me confused :) And the sourceforge link you gave for the old version also shows a new release from a couple days ago. Color me even more confused :)

New applications should use pcre2; but it's actually a good thing that src:pcre3 is still maintained: $ apt-cache rdepends libpcre3 | sort -u | wc -l 358

But why was pcre3 released before pcre2? Are they written by George Lucas?
