Originally you could just copy the kernel image on floppy and it would boot without LILO or anything. I recall that this was why 16-bit compilers were also required to build the kernel back in those days (I compiled my first Linux kernel in 1994). From Linux 1.2.13 README:pic.twitter.com/pPaF2eEXMe

Wow, that's a long time ago... My first connection to Linux was in 1995, when I tried to get a SuSE 5.1 to connect to the Internet (unsuccessfully...). It wasn't much fun or use without the Internet, and installing KDE 1 from floppy was a nightmare...
