Earlier this week during the @openexchange 2018 summit in Rome, we received a scary late night warning from the Google Search Console: 1/5pic.twitter.com/llqWS2xBDs
After investigating, this warning turned out to be for a hostname related to a Web-RTC service we used to run. At 2AM we attempted to turn off the virtual server which corresponded to the domain name in question, but we could not find it in with our VPS provider. 2/5
To be on the safe side, we removed the domain name from the http://PowerDNS.COM zone, hopefully at least removing named access to the hacked server. The morning after, we discovered that we had in fact already turned off the server some time ago! 3/5
So what happened? We had destroyed the virtual server & then its IP address then got assigned to someone else. This person saw traffic still coming for web-rtc1\.powerdns\.com:443, quickly ordered a certificate for it & proceeded to serve up badness. 4/5
So while "we" technically did not get hacked, something within our domain name *was* serving malicious content. Moral of this story: 1) Enable Google Search Console for your domain, it is great 2) Expunge ALL mentions of an IP address from your zone when you remove a VPN. /ends
Also a nice reminder that TLS alone only means that the communication is encrypted, not that you are talking to the expected party.
