There are.... so many possible things. Google up the paper on excel jacking gene names for fun shuddering times. Or check out the DC spreadsheet lesson for a general overview.

It’s from the Data Carpentry ecology spreadsheet lesson, which is excellent.

Is this the old 1901-1904 problem? I used to have that difference memorized so I could look for it...
-
No. This is the, what if someone only entered month and day - then what happens problem. Also showed them what happens with Pre-1900 dates. What’s the 1991-1904 problem? Don’t know that one.

If anyone tells me to look at a date column, I ask them to resend the data with it split into three - with a mumbled excuse about being European. I'm pleased to say much of the epi data I work with is pre-split. Excel is a daemon with dates.
-
I recently had to ditch a bunch of sampling dates for the same reasons. Besides, having year, month, and day separated facilitates an easier subsetting by time.

In every

I just did this with Argo float data in my class. We got hashtags. The students were relieved to see reformatting the column fixed the problem.
