The Chinese being the "other pole of the human mind" is a turn of phrase I wish I can scrub from my head. I really loathe this whole West defining itself against the Unknowable East framework of writing about China.

More I research the Chinese governmen the more similar to Britain it seems tbh. Not "unknowable" or mysterious in its foreignness. Same imperialist stuff.

I genuinely think that the difficulty of learning to read chinese is a huge contributor; a casual learning of French is possible for an English-speaker, but Hanzi? So everything is relayed through translators or not at all, keeping everything far away and inhuman

So then the knowledge even depends on how good a knowledge of each culture your translator has and how they decide to do the translation, do they pull a Nabokovian gloss and word for word it or do they try to parse the metaphors and references?

The number of real documentaries and books that talk about how mystical and magical the "Unknowable East" is is... Staggering.

I just...Chinese people are people just like Westerners. They just don't want to make the effort to understand. Ugh. I hate this.
