My dad likes to say Chinese people would eat everything that flew except air planes, everything that swam except fish, everything with four legs and a back to the sky except chairs and tables, etc it's a pretty common saying.

Europeans used to be the same. Industrialized farming limited the options available in cities, and now many are unaware of that limitation.

very much so. It seems like there's often an urge to not admit to caring (about cute things, but in general also) even if you manifestly do. (Also the really defensive "BACON!" carnivores, yeah)
