    Could it be that teens are now more willing to admit to symptoms of depression, even on an anonymous survey? Also no: Rates of hospital admissions for self-harm and suicide attempts have also increased, and those are not subject to self-report bias.

    There's some discussion in the replies to this tweet that the rise in teen depression is due to more diagnoses or awareness. It is not: These are data from a screening survey of the whole population, not just those who seek a diagnosis.

    The CDC's WISQARS database of fatal injuries updated to 2020 this week. The increase in the number of young people murdered in 2020 is stunning and tragic. The homicide rate for 15- to 24-year-olds hasn't been this high since 1997 when the '90s crime peak was receding.
