Happy ! Can you guess which animal made this well-preserved mess? A giant ground sloth! This specimen was found in Mylodon Cave in Chile. See this preserved poop up close on the Museum’s second floor!🦥💩

Close up of a pile of well-preserved sloth poop. It has a swirled, triangular shape.

How did I not know about this?!?! My new favorite example of adaptive introgression: melanism in Gray Wolves originated from hybridization with domestic dogs and was selected to high frequencies in forested habitats

Many Bat skulls have a gap/cleft between the front teeth. and team show this reduces bite force and increases strain on the skull, but why bats have this is still unclear--perhaps to open mouths wider for prey or enhance echolocation.

February 2: Charley/Charlie Patton wrote Mississippi Boll Weevil Blues, a catchy tune about an insect causing devestating economic pest damage. (Songs boll weevils [there are several!] are cool examples of themed mixed with social commentary).

Listen. I know the jokes write themselves here but there’s a very important fact buried in this: macaques carry ***Herpes B***. That’s not the same herpes humans carry. Herpes B is FATAL to humans. That’s no joke.

Meet the smallest rabbit in N. America, the pygmy rabbit! On average, it weighs just under 1 lb (.45 kg) & grows 11 in (28 cm) long. It inhabits deserts & shrubland across the northwestern U.S. It also digs its own burrows—unusual among N. American rabbits!🐰 [📸: USFWS]

A pygmy rabbit peeks out from its burrow and is surrounded by a snowy landscape. The rabbit has grayish-brown fur and short rounded ears that are perked up. It has round black eyes and is looking toward the left.
