these stories epitomize the reasons women often choose not to report their sexual assault. in a system like this, with judges like these, in a world that prioritizes men's potential over women's lived experiences - why would you? so there's that.

and, by the way, that's not a small thing. it reflects quite poorly on our system. why is this mammoth institution that supposedly addresses harm doing such a piss poor job at it?

but, unsurprisingly, i have another thought, that is...a little more complicated!

going off this article alone, any reasonable person would conclude that these two men should have been charged as adults. that's how the reporter writes it. these two sexist judges dismissed these women's experiences, which is why they refused to charge these two boys as adults.

but, also....these boys are not adults! it is not only acceptable but RIGHT that we don't charge children as adults. it never made much sense to me. kids are kids. you either are an adult or you're not. you aren't extra old because you did something extra bad.

does that mean that we don't hold these boys accountable for the harm they caused? no, it doesn't. these stories are deeply disturbing. and i don't care how good of a college this kid could get into. none of that is relevant to me. what's relevant to me is that they are children.

i believe a world can exist that would account for grievous harm done to children and done by children without subjecting them to the system we currently maintain. children are children. that's not action dependent!

a good skill to cultivate in cases like these is separating the decision from the rhetoric. i think you will discover that the two are tenuously connected, and that we can demand accountability for girls and women in ways outside of the current paradigm.

Me too. And honestly don’t no where to start. And I need coffee. And have a 10am call I need to prep for. So many thoughts. Complicated ones.

Argue a good family would have taught him rape is never a good thing.

"good" as in wealthy. Apparently, morals don't have a thing to do with such a distinction.
