for all the issues that wow has atm, the biggest one is that no one wants to play tank aka the most essential role for pve it's a role with a high barrier to entry that scares ppl off and that's before they find out it's ALSO boring shadowlands needs to make tanking fun
and by "fun" I prob mean overpowered give tanks survivability (i.e. independence) again. maybe big dmg too. you hear ppl say "but why would I play dps if tanks can hit hard?" EXACTLYYYYY. I don't want you to play dps. I want you to tank
ppl need incentive to switch. there is none right now, and it's killing pve engagement
I don't have the #s but I'd guess m+ participation is as low as it's ever been. a big part of that is that you just. cannot. find. tanks. no one wants to do it even if it guarantees a group

speaking as someone who's not exactly pro but usually gets cutting edge raiding achievements, all 15+ etc., i still feel hugely intimidated by all the prior knowledge needed to jump into tanking m+ vs healing or dps. learning m+ as resto druid was massively fun and lenient, 1/2
learning m+ as a prot warrior or blood dk just felt hugely stressful and not fun whatsoever. i actually don't mind the class gameplay that much atm but the responsibilities are too lopsided, at least that's what it feels like to me

I main a tank and all of my alts that can tank do. I have multiples of the same tank class at max. I love tanking, I don't find it dull at all. I find healing and dps dull tho 
Mained tank for years and this is so true. Find myself burning out in raids and m+ before any of my guild cause tanking is just so dead to play
