Technical training is really important. But what about training in appropriateness? When should we be using it? When should we not? It is not free of trade-offs: It likely facilitates MIS in some cases but is expensive, has a learning curve, and risks of its own.https://twitter.com/Skepticscalpel/status/1107257289784872960 …

Attending surgeons and surgical residents, do you think residents are receiving adequate training in robotic surgery? https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/0001839217751692 …

It is skyrocketing in common general surgery procedures! @KyleSheetz has some data that blew my mind. Forthcoming.

A frequent topic of conversation between this Non-Robot MIS Surgeon and our trainees. Important to discuss "value to the patient"! What is the value to the patient of robotic cholecystectomy?

I think we need a better understanding of why surgeons are using the platform in the first place... any qual data you are aware of? Seems like a good K award application.

Major advances in surgery often preceded by doubt, a learning curve and a rise in complications. Certainly seen in lap vs open but the benefit was clear. We are still trying to appreciate the robotic benefit for much of surgery especially in light of high costs.

If and when robotic surgery is integrated with #ArtificialIntelligence, we may be able to appreciate the benefit of this technology. @Laparoscopes

I agree it probably has its role in select cases. I will never understand it’s benefit in common general surgery cases like lap chole. The aggressive marketing ignores the cost, time and appropriateness. That we can doesn’t mean we should.
