I’m so proud of Jason Williams from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory on Long Island for winning the Meritorious Prize for his work on Reinventing Scientific Talent. We need to keep fighting for graduates and careers!

A photo of Jason Williams and a description of "Reinventing Scientific Talent."

Thanks for 's push. (This is modified from slides.) Now, Peregrine will fly through the maze of seg-dups better and still very fast. Now, I have to wait for the longer CHM13 reads.

My coworkers and I built a VR browser for exploring GWAS (genome-wide association study) data, and the paper about this virtual reality tool is now live!

Hey Susanna! I've been running such a database for 5 years now (7k+ entries)! It's so fun to peruse and also people use the data to advocate for higher stipends in their departments. I would love it if you would point people there! Thank you!

People keep pointing out that today is a palindrome in day-month and month-day formats, but I’m learning that more people need to write their dates yyyy-mm-dd. Because 2020-02-02 or 20200202 are ALSO palindromes, but they meet the ISO standard and actually sort properly as text.

Bad commute? Find someone who drives the same route as you, stuff 99 phones in their trunk, and give them a few minutes head start.

This may be the fastest ever retraction due to mass peer-review of a manuscript in the history of publishing. Never happens with the most forged articles in main-stream publishing. This is only a testimony to how vital posting pre-prints became!

Even for science and medical applications, I am becoming weary of fine statistical modeling efforts, and believe that we should standardize on a handful of powerful and robust methods. An opinionated thread to give context for 1/8

Analogy. Seq data are opaque to most, so these random matches seem important. But this is more like finding a match in a rambling manifesto posted by a serial killer to a random line from Harry Potter and issuing an arrest warrant for JK Rowling.

Types of peer review: 1) 3 anonymous scientists write secret reviews in a process that takes a few months 2) dozens of known experts write comments that anyone in the world can see hours after a paper is posted (e.g this thread 👇) Explain to me again why is 1 >> 2?

The UNC System paid the Sons of Confederate Veterans $74,999 in an agreement $1 short of needing state approval. Both parties have been hiding the deal's larger purpose -- to facilitate a third-party payoff crucial in a larger plot of legal collusion:

After 8.5 years, today is my last day at PacBio. I'm incredibly fortunate to have had a few roles within PacBio and it's been a transformative experience. Some t life lessons I've gathered about being female working in the life sciences industry, sales, and leadership. 1/
