Mandatory helmets for everyone riding a bicycle anywhere. "Well that's just common sense." Zero blood alcohol when driving a car. "THAT'S EXTREMIST!" This damn country...

😭 This is a tragedy, caused by lethal road design as a result of the gross negligence of successive governments and transport agencies. It’s completely unforgivable - we need to stop pretending these ‘murder strips’ are okay and start holding those responsible to account.

I ride a bike because of the freedom & frankly fun it brings to my everyday life (commuting, collecting kids, shopping). It is unbearable when a person is killed doing the same b/c people in government have failed to build cities & transport system that meets everyone’s needs.

This is what happens when the lion's share of transport funding is soaked up by a few, gold-plated roads, to the detriment of the rest of the road network. This was a policy of the Key government that is apparently continuing under Ardern, and I'm angry about it!

I call this a cul-de-trac. You can drop it in the middle of any neighborhood street for instant traffic calming, bike safety, and community space, while preserving vehicular access.

This is the sad state of NZ media. The only person the reporter talked to was an anti-science campaigner But lots of scary quotes and a silly headline so they'll get clicks

I just watched a pedestrian at an intersection with beg buttons. She got her crossing, then casually pushed the beg button on the other side of the road and continued down the sidewalk. I'm amazed I never thought of doing that.

Empty seats in cars "waste" approximately 40,000 times as much road space in congested cities as bike lanes. But we can't face up to the real problem.

How many "Climate Mayors" provide free parking for all the City Hall employees and jack squat for the workers who take transit?

Sadly, investment in walking, cycling, and public transport will do little to reduce carbon emissions. Why? The road capacity freed up by mode shift will be largely soaked up by more driving. *Pricing* is the only effective way to reduce transport emissions quickly enough.

Yup, totally legal 'cause you've got an under 50cc engine...

We need healthier people & planet. We need all people to have the freedom & enjoyment of moving easily about cities, to not get trapped into cars. Policy makers & councils in NZ have serious work to do!

Compulsory adult helmet laws are designed to keep cycling numbers down, thus creating fewer people for distract/belligerent drivers to grind into so much paste. Cities that are trying to prohibit e-scooters from becoming popular are just now figuring this trick out.

I guess when the model is based on running services and not passenger revenue there might be the temptation to do this. But I’m sure that would never happen because of all of the checks and balances built into the system. Like people tweeting photos of buses not stopping.
