The nice thing about being middle class or rich is that you can fuck up or get unlucky and it won’t necessarily be a big setback. But if you’re poor, one missed piece of paperwork can be catastrophic. We should make more space for poor people to fuck up occasionally

A more meritocratic liberal take might be that we should instead punish the middle class and rich more for their small mistakes, but I think it’s preferable to level up rather than level down

The trick is that many people who believe themselves to be middle class are actually one bad day away from losing everything, but are convinced that they are superior from the more obviously poor
Someone said the average middle class person is closer to a homeless person in wealth than a billionaire. It's a super obvious point, but it's one I don't really think about
