And she gave further oral and written statements to NBC reporters on 10/3-4, before the final confirmation vote on 10/6, to the effect that Avenatti suborned her to sign a false, sworn declaration.

But contemporaneous publication would have revealed 1) that Swetnick's own backtracking in the interview wasn't evidence of just her flakiness but of deliberately aligning to the "corroborator" and 2) that NBC decided to air despite awareness of that.
And decision to report after the Grassley referral might be b/c a criminal investigation could reveal that NBC was accessory after the fact to Avenatti. Better to get ahead of it. "Reckless disregard" evidence 4 sure. Some massive tort verdicts needed to clean this up.
