This is a political stunt meant to single out New York for passing common-sense legislation. Time and time again the Trump administration has shown how far it’s willing to go in its war on immigrants and to intimidate states for doing what is right.

  2. So far the Senate has confirmed 187 federal judges nominated by Trump including 2 U.S. Supreme Court justices and 50 judges for the U.S. Courts of Appeals. By comparison, President Obama, over his eight years in office, appointed only 55 circuit judges.

Landmark ruling by a Dutch court stops government attempts to spy on the poor. This is a clear victory for all those who are justifiably concerned about the existential threats digital government and digital welfare poses for human rights.

The bombing of Gaza is so routine, so gratuitous, that it simply doesn’t even register as news any longer. But it’s still an occupying power dropping high explosives on a defenseless population for whose welfare it is legally accountable as ... the occupying power.

Easy for a white male former diplomat to make the civility and ‘the both sides’ argument. Trump and his devastating policies should not be normalized and legitimized.

Great victory for volunteers and to other humanitarian workers who are saving lives of migrants on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Is anyone surprised by the slippery slope of legitimizing illegal actions under int’l law such as annexation and acquisition of land by force?

Voting like healthcare, should be a HUMAN right of and for ALL citizens. Not just those who haven’t had negative interactions with our criminal justice systems.

These sentences violate U.S. human rights commitments and are out of step with sentencing practices internationally. Read submission END

In addition, decision-makers must have the discretion to review individual cases and determine when it is appropriate to release prisoners, many of whom, like , have served decades for crimes that merit shorter prison terms. 12/

Sentencing and parole reform are key to both slowing down the flow of people going into our prisons and removing obstacles to release after an appropriate amount of time. 11/

Ending mass incarceration in the United States requires significant sentencing reform. Criminal legal policies and practices must consider incarceration the very last resort, rather than the first response to crime. 10/

Since the 1970s, extreme sentencing laws and practices are keeping people incarcerated for far longer than ever before. Half of the 222% percent growth in state prison populations between 1980 and 2010 was due to an increase of time served in prison for all offenses. 9/

Jails across the country are incarcerating 462,000 people pre-trial who have not even been convicted of a crime. Blacks and Latinos represent 56% of the adult prison population, while only 28% of the U.S. general population. 8/

In the United States, more than 2.2 million people are locked behind bars on any given day, and people are incarcerated nearly 11 million times over an average year, while an additional 4.5 million people are on probation or parole. 7/

It's no secret that U.S. has a very serious mass incarceration problem. U.S. incarcerates more people, in both absolute numbers and per capita, than any other nation around the world. 6/

For example, some provisions of the FIRST STEP Act limiting some mandatory minimum sentences in the future are not retroactive and as a result thousands of people in federal prisons today serving sentences under now-reformed statutes will not benefit. 5/
