We can do better than this. And cis het white dudes in tech like me need to help make this happen. The rest of this thread focuses on resources and solutions.
Organizing a design (or any other) event? You can design your process and production to be more welcoming and inclusive.
@ashedryden put together this amazing resource that can help you get started:

You can also assemble a diverse production team.
@hellofisher did this for the Design & Content Conference: @dcontentconf. That’s a big reason why their lineup is one of the most inclusive in the world.https://republicofquality.com/a-diverse-production-team …
Want to write a code of conduct but don’t know where to start? These great resources can help you write one—or improve the one you already have. https://confcodeofconduct.com/ https://medium.com/uplifttogether/how-to-write-a-great-code-of-conduct-2d32448c96a … https://subfictional.com/the-complex-reality-of-adopting-a-meaningful-code-of-conduct/ … https://indieweb.org/code-of-conduct-examples …
Everyone benefits when events are more accessible. These resources help you make sure *everyone* can learn and engage: https://www.exordo.com/blog/accessible-conference-design-10-things-to-consider/ … https://ideasonfire.net/how-to-make-your-event-accessible/ … https://www.socialtables.com/blog/event-planning/accessibility-guidelines/ … https://www.sigaccess.org/welcome-to-sigaccess/resources/accessible-conference-guide/ …
Are you speaking at an event? Ask the organizers how they: - Plan for inclusivity and accessibility - Recruit speakers from under-represented & marginalized communities - Have and can enforce a code of conduct - Have 50/50 gender representation and include non-binary folks
Not to mention: - Pay their speakers fairly - Accommodate speakers' travel & lodging - Make other reasonable accommodations (child care!) as needed
Listen: You are not bad for asking these questions.
Just ask! It really is that simple.
@beep wrote up this great list of questions he asks organizers:https://ethanmarcotte.com/wrote/my-questions-for-event-organizers/ …
Finally: if you’re attending design events, vote with your wallet—prioritize events that have an inclusive lineup of speakers. You’ll learn more and grow faster by hearing about new and different perspectives!
