Easy to say "monomorphization is awful and Rust should never have done it", harder to say "I want all generic functions to be compiled to bytecode and to embed a Rust interpreter in every binary".

You joke, but if we had profile-guided monomorphization where the compiler could make the hot code fast and the cold code slow that would cover an awful lot of ground. (Makes compile times even worse but at least your release builds are built the way you want.)
