Don't you often argue that presidential campaigns are one way that a party negotiates its stances on vital issues, so questions that are not directly relevant to what a person would do in office are nonetheless relevant and important?

Good point! And fair enough. But this one seems especially odd in a presidential election context, since winning would dissolve the question. Put it this way: I wouldn't complain if the candidates talked about it; I just can see why they don't, and why people don't ask.
