If that's correct, it means the Senate Watergate Committee probably did in fact keep Nixon's approval moving down over the spring and summer. A lot of the early revelations by the way came out of the (failed) confirmation hearings for FBI director nominee Patrick Gray.

The biggest revelations from the Gray hearings were that Nixon actively interfered with the continuing FBI investigation. Also that Gray himself had destroyed Watergate evidence.

What is true is that the Saturday Night Massacre was a big turning point in terms of elite opinion and behavior with respect to impeachment. Before, it was mostly a fringe liberal thing; after, if was very mainstream.

Although many conservative Dems and moderate Republicans in Congress were on the fence until the Judiciary Committee acted in summer '74 - and conservative Republicans were mostly flat-out opposed until the "smoking gun" tape was released in August.

As I've argued before: The deal with the Smoking Gun tape was more a question of Nixon continuing to cover up and lie than it was with the specific lie undermined in that tape.
