    One thing I've been doing a lot in marking recently is changing the rubric language from: "poor ➡️ okay ➡️ good ➡️ very good ➡️ excellent" to something more like: "emerging➡️ developing➡️ capable➡️ competent➡️ mastered" I've found it a lot easier to use.

    Even if your advisor is providing mentorship to advance your education and career, one person can't do or be all things. Approach mentorship as something you can get from multiple people--this takes the pressure off one person and allows you to benefit from different perspectives

    100% agree with this. And in many PhD programs, 5 years is only the minimum. Having an advisor who is a good match is essential for good health and success during PhD.

    Just your friendly neighborhood reminder that as you choose a research lab, if you find yourself saying: -how bad can it be -it’s only 5 years -it will be different for me... ...it can be bad (really bad), 5 years is a long time, and it will not be different for you.

    This is excellent advice I share with prospective PhD students.

    My postdoc advisor went above and beyond today to help me with a problem and I just want to remind everyone, especially younger trainees, of a tired but seriously gold piece of advice: when it comes to choosing a lab, pick the person, not the project. 1/

    Glad that, at least in my circles, there is good progress in changing this narrative, but there is still a long way to go.

    It's still so frustrating to see the narrative that people who leave academia do so because they "didn't make the cut." This is so so damaging, and so so wrong on many levels. Academia is not a meritocracy, and people leave for many reasons.

    This thread presents an interesting look behind the scenes of peer review. It sounds like experiences vary based on journal, editor, and perhaps academic field.

    If you have a nemesis who you’d rather didn’t review your papers then the LAST thing you should do is list them as “excluded reviewers”. Many editors will deliberately send your paper to this person. It’d never have occurred to them to do so o/wise Take this advice & flourish
