dunno, I worry that this can lead us into being too dismissive about what drives voters. surely Trump's effort to repeal the ACA + children in cages legitimately helped horrify many voters and probably helped caused them to become more Democratic

both can be true. you're horrified by Trump's policies, you vote Democratic, you begin to see yourself as a Democrat, and you start to develop Democratic attitudes on various policies
