this entire story is absolutely insane. NIMBYs refuse to let the owner of this restaurant sell to developers because they like the aesthetics of the building.https://twitter.com/JoeStGeorge/status/1158879067279519744 …

i'm not sure i agree with this take. if we let every developer redevelop every building we'll only have condos as far as the eye can see. don't block the sale, block developers from bulldozing history.

This isn't nimbyism. Tom is seeking to destroy a public resource for personal profit. The public loses, the individual gains. These sorts of developments should improve the neighborhood, not ruin it.

Also, it is amazing to see people treat “buildings for people to live in” as some kind of nightmare that will ruin the, uh, downtown district.

No, my view is that the historical preservation process shouldn’t be abused to essentially freeze cities in time.https://twitter.com/gravitysrobot/status/1159136571691376640?s=21 …

The claim is that it's architecturally significant. Your view seems to be it doesn't matter what is destroyed as long as someone turns a profit.

“No one should be able to tear anything down if I think it looks nice” is no way to run a city of any size.

Wow what a weird viewpoint. You do realize that developers are making “buildings for the RICH people to live in” right? Being “frozen in time” isn’t the issue, it’s succumbing to hyper capitalist landscapes... I can’t believe I was following you?

by this logic, we should knock down all the expensive condo and apartment buildings in town. That will surely lead to lower housing costs...

You should come to Logan Circle sometime where the fights aren’t even about tearing down a privately owned building but about building on an empty lot next to a “historic” 1911-built building (that should be torn down, IMHO)https://ggwash.org/view/amp/71960
