this. is. bad. history. the founders' understanding of "pure democracy" was not "a popular vote to choose an elected magistrate." don't take it from me, take it from james madison, who was very clear about what he meant by the term.https://twitter.com/EsotericCD/status/1108013393921929216 …

No, the electoral college exists to counteract the will of a vulgar popular vote, which the Founders, who read their Greek history, knew was the cause of the destruction of Athens. Same with the Senate. Pure democracy is an evil, not a virtue. https://twitter.com/jerkass27/status/1108012834280083456 …

(capitalized for emphasis): "From this view of the subject it may be concluded that a pure democracy, BY WHICH I MEAN A SOCIETY CONSISTING OF A SMALL NUMBER OF CITIZENS, WHO ASSEMBLE AND ADMINISTER THE GOVERNMENT IN PERSON, can admit of no cure for the mischiefs of faction."

That is Federalist No. 10. In the subsequent documents, Madison goes on to explain why popular election can work provided a large enough polity and shared powers between different departments.

Put differently, if Madison—the father of the Constitution—thought popular election of the president was the "pure democracy" that toppled Athens, why did he support doing it during the constitutional convention?

Here is Madison discussing why he thought popular election of the president made sense. His only reservation was the fact that the southern states held so many slaves that they would not be able to bring their populations to bear on the choice of president! when Madison or Hamilton or Jay referenced "pure democracy" as a threat to stable republican government, they meant direct rule by referendum. hell, I think it's Federalist No. 55 where Madison compares the Senate favorably to the representative elements of the Greek democracy!

Also, and more importantly, that the Southern states would be less able to defend the institution of slavery itself.
