I think of Rome. Years of a Republic and then..not so much.

Dog deeper. WHY did the Romans accept autocracy after having enjoyed a successful representative government for centuries? What happened to convince them to walk away from self-government? Is that sort of thing happening now? That's the stuff to be fighting.
