This @WalkerBragman piece is interesting—there’s an implication that Beto pushing for abolition of the local police union is a bad thing. I’d argue that police unions shouldn’t be considered “public sector unions,” because they perpetuate class inequity.https://theintercept.com/2019/01/13/beto-o-rourke-public-sector-unions/ …

Structurally, law enforcement unions are considered one of the most significant drivers of mass incarceration. Even as prison and jail populations decline, unions push for consistent levels of staffing... https://twitter.com/pdxlawgrrrl/status/1042762430856650752?s=21 … @JohnFPfaff

It’s also absolutely the case that police are used to disrupt or preclude direct actions and broader working-class movements.https://twitter.com/nberlat/status/1084564773763719169?s=21 …

it's not an accident that police unions have continued to do fine while basically every other labor sector has been under assault. Police are regularly used to disrupt broader organizing of all sorts.

Yeah, even if we accept that police unions "perpetuate class inequity," they are still "public sector unions" by any objective standard. #tcot

I guess if we want to hash it out literally, police and COs are employed by the state, making them "public sector" employees. But if we are talking about class consciousness, I don't think pro-union politics necessitates supporting police unions. Police maintain class hierarchy.

well to be fair it did show us that Beto: -opposed police unions while on city council -opposed them primarily on the basis of fiscal efficiency, not unjust outcomes of police unions -opposed public unions generally: "The public sector is a completely different situation."

I had been wondering what pseudo-leftist idiot was using "union" and "police union" interchangeably, but didn't want to reward the story with a click. Thanks for clarifying -- I'm making my "disappointed but not surprised" face pretty hard right now.

I mean honestly, it looks like the editor may have done more damage than the writer, here.
