In Cleveland and New Orleans, county jail populations are shrinking, but deaths and abuse of incarcerated people continue. Ironically, decarceration may now be exposing the fundamental cruelty of incarceration itself. My latest for :

In places that have managed to reduce their jail populations, conditions of confinement often remain abysmal. At the Cuyahoga County, OH facility, where the jail population is at a 20-year low, there were 69 reported suicide attempts in 2018.

Ultimately, a jail is a jail, and pouring public funds into our costly and counterproductive carceral system cannot be the best solution to the constant stream of deaths and suffering. great one from

the documentation has been found! h/t It's on page 4 of this pdf. "a landlord’s agent that collects a [broker] fee... from the tenant can be subject to discipline."

Plus eating a broker fee makes you more likely to grit your teeth and stay in a bad living situation (“I already paid the fee and can’t afford another one so soon”). More advantageous for tenants to be able to move every year or two, esp given how unaccountable landlords are

Anyway, total joke that REBNY response to this is “bad news for NYC tenants!” (leads to rent increase) Most NYers can’t afford to cough up thousands of $$ up front for broker fee. Slightly higher rent is more manageable. And plus they raise our rents all the time anyway.

Would be curious if anyone can find a link to the relevant DOS documents. Crains reported this too, but paywalled

Woah. State regulators just announced that landlords (including NYC) must pay broker fees for real estate agents instead of prospective tenants. In case you don't live here - broker fees typically = 1-1.5x month's rent up front. It's insanity.

Organizers in both Cleveland & New Orleans have demanded community oversight of county jails to mitigate CO abuse. Local oversight would chip away at the wall of secrecy that protects COs from accountability & complement local political actions.

Watch this. Biden adviser  will NOT say she believes the data coming in from Iowa is correct. This is not going to help anyone trust the process. "I guess we'll have to take the Iowa Democratic party at their word."

NEW: two members of DNC rules committees are simultaneously working on Mike Bloomberg's presidential campaign. One was just nominated by DNC Chair Tom Perez to be a vice-chair of the Convention Rules Committee.

wow it’s almost like Alabama closed Holman Prison, knowing how much overcrowding/ensuing chaos and violence that would bring about in Alabama’s other prisons, so that they could then justify spending $900 million+ on building 3 brand new prisons

We've seen some scattered efforts to create local police oversight frameworks to rein in abusive policing practices, but basically 0 analogue for abuse by COs. Notable that coalitions organizing against county jail abuse are demanding community oversight--counties should try it.

Big county jails—incl. in New Orleans, and the Cleveland area—are decarcerating, yet violence remains high and conditions of confinement are poor. Decarceration, writes "may now be exposing the fundamental cruelty of incarceration itself."

And since I keep talking about this IRL: there was no reason why the Iowa Democrats had to keep using SDEs to award delegates once they started counting tabulated votes. This was entirely their choice, and the risk of a muddled result was totally obvious
