Look, if you want to use emacs or vi or nano or ed that is all on you. But IRC has a network effect and creates real barriers.

@IRCCloud tremendously lowers the barrier for getting into IRC. I would argue it is as easy as *any* other chat client. -

Disconnects. Means you can't log on later and see what happened while you were gone.

But really it goes beyond that. This isn't just a client problem. Even picking/registering a nick is a pain.
