I don’t understand this sort of rhetoric at all. If Gillibrand accepts Biden’s denial, then what on earth does she mean when she says Reade has spoken “her truth”? https://www.google.com/amp/s/thehill.com/homenews/senate/495139-gillibrand-addresses-reade-allegations-i-stand-by-vice-president-biden%3Famp …pic.twitter.com/j3nXpTj5tk

I sort of get the “my truth” thing when we are talking about an incident about which people have different perceptions, like about whether an act was consensual. But that doesn’t apply here. There’s only one truth about whether this happened or not.

Isn't there a scenario where someone truly believes an event happened nearly 30 yrs ago while the other person denies it? Without corroborating facts/evidence, you can say "I believe this didn't happen, but I can understand how someone may truly believe that it did, to them"?

Not to be insensitive, but yes... I'd call it some sort of mental illness. And I harbor no ill will towards those, but I don't think society or people can survive treating imaginations / delusions as an objective truth that everyone else must accept.

That doesn’t apply here because Joe denied anything like this happened period. But what’s kind of interesting is if he said “yeah something happened, but let me go through all the painful nuances of why this wasn’t assault” then yeah the “my truth” thing would make more sense.

I think she's politely saying that she thinks Reade is crazy and believes that this happened.

Technically she doesn’t say that Reade has spoken “her truth”, just that she was given the space to speak and she did speak.
