As usual, people are conflating plain socialism with State socialism, that is state ownership of means of production, to go all Marxist on you, vs capitalism’s ownership of means of production vs the provision of social services by the generosity of the wealthy vs state taxes

The sole reason why people love vague concepts of "socialism/capitalism" is to avoid actually defining what they really mean. It's a feature, not a bug.

In fairness, they're probably not native Enlgish speakers. How many Americans are sure they know the difference between socialiser & socialiste?

National socialism is where your country is super friendly and wants to meet lots of other countries, right?

Are you familiar with public opinion polls? 5% of all people you reach on a landline yell "Car wash! Hot sauce! Back hair!" and the pollsters just write it down without realizing they called during "Family Feud."

Well, at least they aren't conflating it with communism. But 6% is just outside the margin of error so most of those people were accidenatlly conceived.
