In America, the ones I know who took less than 5 years are MD-PhD students, who usually do it in 3-4, but it's kind of cheating when it's bookended by 2 years of med school each side. 3-4 is much more typical among the European PhDs I've met, but I haven't looked outside of Bio.
The average at Caltech (for chem at least) is 5.7 years and people STILL talk about 5 years as if it is the norm.
I once attended an academic CV workshop and the speaker said something like "academia is a pyramid scheme" and encouraged young scholars to rethink. Not very encouraging words then, but upon finishing my PhD I can see the truth in that statement...

The median is probably a better metric to represent this type of data. I recently read overall median is just under 6 years in US but greatly varies by field... humanities PhD takes about 7 years!
Took almost 10 years. Granted, I took time off for depression and then to take care of my dad, but even then it took over 7 years. The shit part is that if you don’t complete you PhD in least amount of time, your chances of winning a postdoc grant (at least in Canada) plummets.
