Why is your intuition that this has anything to do with norms & not simple conformity/imitation? How did their injunctive or descriptive expectations change just because someone started singing? Existence of *social* norms is neither sufficient nor necessary for behavior change

I’m fine with either explanation. But I suspect it’s descriptive, not injunctive, and it does not look like non-conscious mimicry or other simple forms of conformity. So my intuitive is that this conformity is driven by perceived social norms—but its an empirical question.
