From what I've read, we have no idea bias had anything to do with this. The BBC had three separate story lines: James passing Bryant in scoring, both playing for L.A., and Bryant's death. It is quite possible it was simply an editing error.

I admit it’s hard to say in this specific case, but this is a very well established form of bias—there has been a century of work on this topic.
