Our new paper in Perspectives proposes the MAD model to explain moral contagion. People have identity-based (M)otives to share moral-emotional content; which captures our (A)ttention; and is amplified by the (D)esign of social media.

People who use homeopathy and other alternative therapies as part of their cancer treatment are twice as likely to die from the disease as those who use conventional medicine alone.

I’ve long harbored a worry that gratitude, while nudging people to be cooperative, might make them complacent and ripe for ongoing exploitation. Nope! It makes them expect and enforce better behavior from everyone.

New poll finds Democrats on Twitter more liberal, less focused on compromise than those not on the platform. It’s important to understand how political discourse online differs in important ways from the general population (ht )

For those teaching the power of social identity to propel conflict, there is no better example than a goalie fight -- two people who have had zero previous interaction coming to blows "for the group". Bonus, each goalies was on the other team last year!

President Trump has rescinded restrictions on the US military's ability to use landmines, weapons that have been banned by more than 160 countries due to their history of killing and wounding civilians, the White House says

This is also a reminder to academics to make their papers accessible on their website, preprint servers or other forums and kindly respond to requests for copies of their work. Many readers are not at universities or institutions that can afford journal subscriptions.

I got an email from someone who is trying to read journal articles from one of my courses. But they can’t afford $19.99 for each journal article. This is a reminder that you can usually find the articles for free on most authors’ websites or just email them for a free copy.

WEALTH INEQUALITY: The richest 1% controls more wealth now than at any time in more than 50 years. But what does wealth inequality really look like? turned America’s economic pie into a real one and asked people a simple question: Who gets what?

If you drive down the road and see a car crash you are going to look. But the internet interprets that as if it is what people want. Social media algorithms exploit these same tendencies and promote social conflict because it increases engagement.

How politicians talk to the masses has changed over time, becoming more nationalistic and communal (rather than appealing to hierarchy and duty). Neat new work by and Shige Oishi, now in press at PSPB

A great illustration of the power of social norms. Notice that not a single person needed to change their attitude towards Bon Jovi. There was no persuasive message. But hearing others join in the song led them to join the group.

As a trained scientist and a self-taught artist, the strongest commonalities I see between science and art are the ways they teach and enable us to understand the world around us. Drawing hard lines between the disciplines denies their overlap. Many great scientists were artists

If the primary feels extremely contentious on here, remember that: - 22% of American adults use Twitter - 80% of their tweets come the 10% of users that post constantly

We’ve gotten used to the status quo. Every Black child in America deserves the opportunity to be as successful as their white peers, regardless of which zip code they’re born in. Time to refocus our efforts on making equality of opportunity a reality.
