Interesting @jaysonst and @enosarris. One question. Since strikeouts are at an all time high would K percentages have been a better measuring stick than strikeouts per game? When the K-rate was 5.5 per nine a 1.5 K per game difference would be more significant than 2.5 now.

Except that their strikeouts were going in the opposite direction of everyone else!

Anybody bother to check if the "eye-popping" trend continued in 2018 and '19? Seems like that would give you a more complete picture than just comparing a WS team ('17) vs a non-playoff team ('16) wouldn't it?

.You raise a good point. I did look into the 2018 and 2019 teams. We decided to hone in on the 2017 team because A) it was the year of the trash-can banging and B) the change in their performance was so much more dramatic.

This is an article BEFORE the 2017 on which the Astros were expected to make a huge decline in strikeout rate.https://blogs.fangraphs.com/the-astros-have-a-completely-new-look/ …

You that's what happens when you replace Carter, Rasmus, Valbuena (rip) and other high strike guys with contact hitters lol. They realized striking out 75% of the time and hitting bombs isn't winning baseball.

Except they have maintained the strikeout rate after the scheme was ended. The team itself admitted they stopped bc the analytics didn’t show that it was an advantage for them.
